County Appraiser Duties

  • Make necessary changes in property classification or appraised value before certifying values to the county clerk (K.S.A. 79-1465).
  • Participate in the appeals process as required.
  • Follow all laws governing property valuation and assessment for tax purposes.
  • Adjust current year property valuations if the Board of Tax Appeals issues a value reduction for the prior year, before October 31 (K.S.A. 79-1460).
  • List, value, and assess all taxable property (K.S.A. 79-1426).
  • Perform all duties of the office as required by law (K.S.A. 79-1473).

Accountability of the County Appraiser

The County Appraiser’s primary responsibility is to value and assess all taxable property fairly and uniformly in accordance with the law—ensuring a just foundation for distributing the cost of local services.

    • Appraise and assess property accurately, uniformly, and lawfully.
    • Discover property that is unlisted or incorrectly listed.
    • Ensure exempt property is correctly exempted, and taxable property is assessed accordingly.
    • List all taxable real and personal property within the county.
    • Utilize subpoena powers to obtain documents or testimony for proper valuation (K.S.A. 79-1461).
