History & Demographics
History
Set in the northwest part of the state is a county with rolling prairies, striking bluffs, and a rich history. This is Trego County. It's roots run deep from early days of the first white men in the area, an exploration party by J.C. Fremont in the 1840's, to the expansion of the region with the Butterfield Overland Despatch (B.O.D.) in 1865.
The development of the Kansas Pacific Railroad through the county brought growth to the area along with the homesteaders and pioneers to build the towns and settle this country.
It was on June 21, 1879, that Governor John P. St. John signed the proclamation of organization for the county. Prior to this proclamation, the legislature of 1869 described the boundaries of the county and named it in honor of Captain Edgar Poe Trego.
